Remediation at Scale
Advanced CSD — high-purity Calcium Sulfate Dihydrate — for soil, water, mine reclamation, and industrial site recovery. Backed by 20+ million tons of consistent, OMRI-listed natural gypsum.
Remediation is no longer a soil-only conversation. EcoGEM® supplies high-purity natural gypsum to projects reclaiming sodic and damaged soils, reducing phosphorus and nitrogen loading in surface water, stabilizing mine tailings, and returning industrial and brownfield acreage to productive use. Consistent quality, custom particle sizing, and domestic or worldwide shipment — 100% of the time.
Remediation is no longer a soil-only conversation.
For most of the last decade, remediation meant one thing: repairing sodic, crusted, compacted farmland. That work still matters — and EcoGEM® still does it. But the ground that needs repair has gotten a great deal wider than a field. The same mineral chemistry that rebuilds a sodic soil profile is now being specified for surface water quality, mine and tailings reclamation, and returning industrial acreage to use. One mineral. One supply chain. A much larger map.
- Soil structure — Advanced CSD displaces sodium with calcium, re-flocculates dispersive clays, and opens tight ground to water and roots. Documented infiltration increases up to 3×. (UC ANR)
- Water quality — Correctly timed applications cut dissolved-phosphorus concentrations in runoff 40–70%, with the binding effect documented to last 20+ months per application. (Ohio State, W.A. Dick)
- Disturbed and reclaimed land — Soluble calcium moderates sodicity in spoils and mixed overburden, and carries calcium into acid subsoils to reduce aluminum toxicity so roots can develop. (Texas A&M AgriLife Research)
- Water held, not lost — Every 1% increase in soil organic matter holds as much as 25,000 gallons of available water per acre. Structure is what makes that possible. (USDA-NRCS)
- pH-neutral — Advanced CSD corrects structure and supplies calcium and sulfur without the pH shift that comes with lime, so it will not interfere with a separate pH program on site.
- Purity is the variable — At >90% CSD, high-purity material leaves under 3% insoluble residue; lower-grade mined gypsum can leave ~19% undissolved filler you haul, spread, and get nothing from. (OSU Extension ANR-20)
What Advanced CSD does in the ground.
Advanced CSD is EcoGEM®'s naturally mined Calcium Sulfate Dihydrate (CaSO₄·2H₂O) — selenite gypsum, OMRI-listed for organic use, held above 90% purity. It supplies roughly 22% calcium and 18% plant-available sulfur, it is pH-neutral, and it is far more soluble than limestone — so it moves into the profile instead of sitting on top of it.
Immediate
Soluble calcium and sulfate enter solution on the first wetting event. Surface sealing begins to break.
Near-immediate
Calcium ions displace sodium on clay exchange sites. Sodium leaches out with drainage water.
With root flush
Restored aggregation and biological activity build the pore space that carries water and air.
Structural
The change holds. Aggregated peds, improved drainage, and a profile that stays open through the season.
The sodicity nobody tested for
On disturbed sites, sodicity is frequently the undiagnosed cause of failed revegetation. Overburden from depth can carry sodium levels no one measured, because the site was characterized for contaminants and pH rather than soil physics. If seed is not establishing and the surface seals after rain, ask for ESP or SAR before you reseed again.
Where we're working.
Remediation projects rarely look alike. The mineral chemistry is consistent; the spec, particle size, and application method are not. Here is where Advanced CSD is being specified.
Soil Remediation
Sodic, saline, and compacted soils. Sodium displacement, crust prevention, and drainage recovery on farmland, rangeland, and irrigated acreage — the original EcoGEM® market, with the deepest body of field data behind it.
Soil Remediation →Water Remediation
Nutrient load and surface water quality. Dissolved phosphorus and nitrogen reduction in agricultural runoff — the fraction that passes straight through buffer strips and sediment basins.
Water Remediation →Mine & Tailings Reclamation
Spoils, tailings, and post-extraction ground. Sodicity moderation, structural stabilization, and the seedbed conditions a revegetation plan needs in order to actually take.
Mine & Tailings →Industrial & Brownfield Sites
Returning acreage to productive use. Soil conditioning for redevelopment, landscaping, and regrading — high-purity mineral input with documented composition, for sites where what you apply gets reviewed.
Industrial & Brownfield →Irrigation & Water Quality
When your water is the problem. High-sodium, high-bicarbonate irrigation water degrades structure every time you run it. Advanced CSD counteracts sodium loading in-season, including through the system in solution grade.
Irrigation & Water Quality →Land Development & Turf
Construction sites, athletic fields, and golf. Compaction relief, salt management, and drainage on ground that gets used hard and cannot be taken out of service to fix.
Land Development & Turf →Why remediation specs come to EcoGEM®.
Remediation decisions get reviewed — by agronomists, engineers, consultants, and regulators. That changes what matters about the material.
- Purity you can put in a spec — >90% Calcium Sulfate Dihydrate, naturally mined, with consistent documented composition. Not a synthetic FGD or run-of-mine material of variable origin.
- Reserve depth — More than 20 million tons of high-quality CaSO₄·2H₂O in reserve. Multi-year reclamation programs do not outrun supply, and the spec still holds in year three.
- Built to your application method — Custom particle sizing, pelletized for spreadability on rough ground, or solution grade for metering through irrigation and water systems.
- OMRI-listed — Certified for organic use, which keeps organic operations and sensitive-site projects in scope.
- NRCS Practice 333 and cost-share — A recognized conservation practice, eligible for federal EQIP and state water-quality programs such as Ohio's H2Ohio. Ask us whether your acres qualify.
- Mineral scientists, not order-takers — Our team reads your soil, water, or site characterization and writes the rate. Every project starts with data.
What Advanced CSD does not do
It does not neutralize acidity — CSD is pH-neutral, so where a spoil is acid-generating, lime or an alkaline amendment does that work. It does not remediate heavy metals or organic contaminants, which require contaminant-specific characterization and treatment. And it does not substitute for topsoil replacement, regrading, or drainage where those are the binding constraint. We would rather tell you up front than have a reclamation plan built on a mineral that was never going to do that job.

How a remediation project starts.
Send us your analysis.
Soil test, water analysis, or site characterization — whatever you have. ESP or SAR, ECe, calcium and magnesium, texture, and drainage are the numbers that decide the rate. If you do not have them yet, we will tell you exactly what to pull.
We write the rate.
Our mineral scientists specify product, rate, particle size, timing, and application method for your conditions — using the University of California gypsum-requirement standard where sodic reclamation is the objective. Not a catalog number. A plan.
We deliver and stay on it.
Domestic or export shipment on your program schedule, with follow-up measurement so you can document what changed. Leave a check strip — in eighteen months it is the only honest measure of what the program bought.
Frequently asked questions
What is remediation, and what role does gypsum play?
Remediation is the repair of soil, water, or land that has degraded to the point of losing productive function. Calcium Sulfate Dihydrate contributes in two ways: it supplies soluble calcium that displaces sodium on clay particles, restoring the structure water, air, and roots depend on — and it binds phosphorus so it stays in place instead of moving into surface water.
Does EcoGEM® handle more than soil remediation?
Yes. The same mineral chemistry is specified for surface water quality, mine and tailings reclamation, irrigation water sodium management, and industrial and brownfield site recovery. Soil remediation is where the deepest field data sits, but it is no longer the whole of the market.
How does Advanced CSD reduce phosphorus runoff?
Calcium from dissolving CSD reacts with soluble phosphorus to form calcium phosphate — far less mobile in water, but still plant-available. Ohio State research documents dissolved-phosphorus losses cut 40–70%, with the effect persisting at least 20 months per application. Improved infiltration compounds it: less runoff volume means less nutrient transport regardless of the chemistry.
Will it change my soil pH?
No. Calcium Sulfate Dihydrate is pH-neutral — that is its advantage over lime. It corrects structure and supplies calcium and sulfur without a pH shift, so it is safe on ground already at target pH and will not interfere with a separate pH program. Where acidity must be corrected, use lime; the two do different jobs and can be used together.
How is Advanced CSD different from byproduct gypsum?
Advanced CSD is naturally mined selenite gypsum held above 90% Calcium Sulfate Dihydrate, with consistent, documented composition. Byproduct and synthetic FGD gypsums vary in purity and trace composition by source. Because CSD releases calcium and sulfate only as it dissolves, the inert fraction is dead weight — Ohio State Extension found high-purity material left under 3% insoluble residue, versus up to ~19% for lower-grade mined product (ANR-20).
How long does sodic reclamation take?
It depends on severity, drainage, and water availability. Mild sodicity often responds within a single season. Severely sodic ground can take three to five years of repeat application under the NRCS Practice 333 cap of 5 tons per acre per year, with leaching between passes.
Can you reclaim sodic ground without good drainage?
No. Calcium displaces sodium, but the sodium has to leave the profile. Without adequate internal drainage or a functioning tile system, displaced sodium simply redistributes. Drainage comes first — and we will tell you honestly if that is the bigger problem on your site.
Can it be applied through irrigation?
Yes. EcoGEM® produces a solution grade for application through irrigation and water treatment systems, alongside pelletized and custom-sized dry products. Finely sized high-purity CSD metered into surface and flood irrigation water is an approach UC ANR studied in almonds.
Is it approved for organic operations?
Yes. EcoGEM® Calcium Sulfate Dihydrate is OMRI-listed and certified for organic use, which keeps organic operations and sensitive-site projects in scope.
